How do I go about getting my belongings from an ex?
I moved in with a guy I was dating in September 2015. in April 2016 I had to suddenly move out because of unforeseen circumstances. All of my belongings is still in his house. After months of promising he will return my belongings to me, he is now ignoring my calls, requests and refuses to give me back my belongings. I have sent him countless emails, WhatsApps, SMS’s and phoned him.

Thank you. That could be theft. What you should do is to approach the police station in the area where your Ex resides and open up a case of theft. If the police could not assist you in this regard, what you should then do is to bring a mandatory interdict application to the court. Interdict is simply a court order that is sought for the purposes of enforcing existing right. In your case, your right of ownership to your own property. It is mandatory because the court will be ordering him to do something, i.e, release your property to you.
