Property given as a gift
My previous employer gave me a laptop that had been unused for quite a while and said I can keep it. I left their employ almost a year ago and now the partner is in contact with me threatening to open a police case to get the laptop back.
I have since sold the laptop to cover expenses as I am not currently working. I sold it as it was a gift and it was not asked for on the day I left employment so as far as I knew, it was mine.
Am I under an legal obligation to pay them back the cost of the laptop?
If I ignore them, what are the legal implications?
Good day Artemis D, I suggest you do not ignore them. In fact arrange an appointment with both the partner and your previous employer and inform the partner exactly as you put it that it was a gift and sold it. If your employer now recants the gift in front of his partner you may have to repay them the moneyfor the laptop on your terms.
